Ri$k Happens: Hot hot seat

Jan. 23, 2022 - By Angela Cady, AIC - Loss Analyst, ARA Insurance

The rental store truck was parked and the employees started unloading and setting up the rental equipment for their client’s large event. It took quite a while to get everything perfect. When they returned to the truck, they found a small fire had damaged the inside of the truck’s cab. Firefighters were called, but the fire already was out when they arrived. It was later determined the fire originated with an employee’s work cellphone that had been left in the truck.

The rental store employees took pictures of the damage and completed the accident reporting procedure. The rental store manager obtained an estimate to see how extensive the damage was, but made sure to hold off on repairs until he determined if they wanted to file a claim. They eventually decided to file a claim due to the cost of repairs. An appraiser was assigned to inspect the damage. The matter is ongoing.

A cellphone catching fire is unlikely, but when such issues do arise, they are commonly related to the battery. Dropping your phone, leaving it in the sun for too long, exposure to temperature extremes, malware, manufacturer problems or charging issues can lead to battery damage and fire exposure. If you hear hissing or popping sounds, smell burning plastic or feel excessive heat, unplug the unit immediately and take it in for service. Call emergency services if you believe there is an immediate danger.
