Ri$k Happens: Bump and run

Apr. 04, 2021 - By Mary Ann Gormly, CERP - Loss Analyst, ARA Insurance

The driver of the rental store’s pickup truck was on the highway traveling 65 miles an hour. There was traffic all around him as it was the start of rush hour. Semi after semi entered the highway just after the rest area on the side of the road. The pickup truck driver had moved over to the middle lane to allow room for the big rigs to enter the highway. He knew they needed space to get up to speed and enter the flow of traffic.

About a mile down the road, he felt a bump on the side of his truck. In a flash he felt it again and then the loud scraping sound of metal on metal. His truck moved slightly to the left, but he was able to remain in his lane of traffic. A semi had moved into his lane and scraped the entire passenger side of his truck. The semi driver appeared unaware of the collision and continued down the highway.

The pickup truck driver was able to move to the side of the road where he called 911 and his store manager. A witness pulled over behind him and she was able to give the police officer a partial license plate number of the semi. The lady had been in the lane behind the semi and witnessed the accident.

The police department is investigating the accident and the insurance company for the rental store will repair the damage to the pickup. Once the driver of the at fault vehicle is located, they will be contacted for reimbursement of repairs to the rental store’s truck.
