Ri$k Happens: Weather or not

Feb. 28, 2021 - By Mary Ann Gormly, CERP - Loss Analyst, ARA Insurance

Recently, more than half of claims reported to ARA Insurance have been weather-related. This time of year, across the country there typically is a mixed bag of weather happening at any given time.

This year, several areas have experienced weather systems they do not typically have, so many municipalities were caught off guard by snow, ice and freezing temperatures.

People and vehicles slipped and skidded on ice, tents were damaged by the weight of snow, pipes froze and burst, and roofs collapsed due to colder than normal temperatures.

Now, tornado season is just around the corner with hurricane season following shortly after. Take a look around your facility. Is there anything you can do to prepare?

As it says in the ARA Foundation Disaster Planning and Recovery Guide, until it happens to you, you may not give as much time and energy to planning for an emergency as you should. Being better prepared can help you manage your risk and recover quickly to not only help yourself, but your employees and the communities you serve.
