JLG takes equipment into the digital world

Augmented reality app brings tools into the palm of customer’s hands

Can a machine fit where it is wanted? Can a lift reach the height needed? Do you have access to operational information to help you use the equipment? Is the machine up to date on its inspections? For equipment from JLG Industries, McConnellsburg, Pa., there’s an app for that.

The JLG® Augmented Reality App, which was first introduced at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2020, uses a mixture of JLG data and augmented reality (AR) to assist customers with their equipment. While the technology is a major advancement, the goal of the app is to help customers.

“We want to push the envelope of the technology we use, but our customer base — the construction industry — they’re not going to take stuff on just because it’s cool. It has to help solve problems,” says Korry Kobel, director of product development, JLG Industries. “We need to use technology and connectivity, but it needs to be tied to solving real job-site challenges.”

The app comes with a suite of five tools: machine visualization, kit visualization, operation guidance, decal viewer and inspection assistance. AR can be found throughout the app, including placing and moving machines in a job site using the machine visualization tool, viewing accessories on real equipment in the kit visualization tool, showing information needed to complete an inspection on the inspection assistance tool and more.

AR is a key focus in these tools, but the app wasn’t created just to put a fun tool of AR in the pockets of customers.

“We have a lot of information that exists, so how do we get that in our customers’ hands and then how do we apply augmented reality into those modules? The AR is supplementary to all of the data that is being communicated in all of the modules. You’re not trying to justify the use of AR. It’s a natural use of the technology to solve the problems at hand in these five different modules,” Kobel says.

In the equipment rental industry, many of the tools will assist a rental store with information, inspection assistance and figuring out the best new equipment to buy. A rental customer can use the app, too, for operation instructions, safety information and viewing decals. The decal viewer also can translate the information in nearly 20 languages.

“JLG is very passionate about elevating access in three key areas: productivity, safety and technology,” Kobel says. “We’re constantly trying to figure out how we can make our customer’s lives easier by delivering greater machine value.”

In terms of introducing new technology to their customers, JLG doesn’t plan on stopping at an AR app.

“This app is a good example of the direction JLG is heading,” Kobel says. “But we’re just getting started.”

The JLG Augmented Reality App is available to download for free through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. More information can be found online at jlg.com/en/augmentedreality
