ARA partners with NER giving members stronger theft prevention service

Help us honor an officer at The Rental Show

Nominations are being accepted for the ARA Insurance Services/National Equipment Register Award, an honor bestowed upon an individual who has helped the equipment rental industry fight theft.

The fourth annual ARA Insurance Services/NER Award will be presented during a special ceremony at The Rental Show, ARA's annual convention and trade show taking place in Las Vegas, Feb. 10-14, 2008.

The ARA Insurance Services/NER Award was established to highlight heavy-equipment theft recovery and the hard work of law enforcement personnel to prevent theft and recover stolen equipment. The award recognizes a sworn law enforcement officer or a civilian support person who has performed "exceptional service" to the rental industry through the recovery of rental equipment or through theft-prevention initiatives.

The recipient will be afforded VIP guest status at The Rental Show, including round-trip travel and accommodations, and a commemorative plaque. In addition, a $1,000 grant will be awarded to the recipient's department to aid in equipment-theft investigations.

Partnership helps rental owners combat problem

Equipment theft is a big issue for the rental industry. It is estimated that as much as $1 billion worth of equipment is stolen each year, according to the National Equipment Register (NER). Recovery rates have not been high primarily due to lack of accurate information for law enforcement.

To help the recovery effort, the American Rental Association (ARA) has joined forces with NER, the leader in theft prevention and recovery efforts. NER provides an information network that brings together equipment owners, their insurers, law enforcement and the equipment industry to fight equipment theft.

Through this partnership, ARA members may register up to 1,000 pieces of mobile equipment at no cost.

Both ARA and NER believe the most cost-effective and long-term solution is to make accurate information available to law enforcement when they need it. This partnership will help do that.

What you, as an ARA member, receive from this partnership

As mentioned, ARA members may register up to 1000 pieces of equipment free of charge. Eligible equipment includes mobile units (towed or self-propelled) such as lifts, earthmoving and highway maintenance equipment.

The smallest equipment that ARA members may register under this agreement includes such items as generators, compressors, washers and welders worth approximately $5,000 new.

All members who register their equipment will receive a warning decal that notifies a potential thief that the equipment is registered on a national database searched by law enforcement. A thief might remove the decal but knows that the equipment is still registered.

ARA members also do not have to pay a recovery fee for stolen equipment that is retrieved through this partnership.

Register your equipment today

To ensure that the registry has the most accurate information for law enforcement, ARA requests that you register your equipment as soon as possible. The registration process requires specific information about your equipment and your unique ARA member ID.

Once you are registered, you may use the site to access individual records, add numbers or access specific detail about a piece of equipment. Rental companies with more than 100 units to be registered should contact NER directly to discuss an electronic upload of data.
