VMAC sponsors LEGO robotics program

Nov. 22, 2020

VMAC, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, has begun sponsoring the Nanaimo Science’s Saturday Morning Science program. The sponsorship provides subsidy support for 10 children ages 6 to 12 to take part in 12 weeks of Saturday Morning Science programming, the first four of which will be LEGO-themed.

In the Nanaimo Science LEGO robotics program, children work with complex LEGO kits and software for an enriching experience not often found in local public schools. The kids use a computer program to select a specific robot, like a car or a plane, from LEGO’s various plans. They build their chosen robot and then use the software to program it to perform specific tasks, like driving along a line. Two Nanaimo Science Outreach Educators are available to guide the kids through the project, over four two-hour Saturday morning sessions.

“Saturday Morning Science is a perfect fit for VMAC’s Corp. sponsorship program, as it allows children to develop an interest in science, engineering, coding and robotics technology in a fun and interactive environment,” said Gord Duval, VMAC’s vice president of marketing and sales. “Nanaimo Science is an integral educational resource in our community and VMAC is proud to be able to support them in inspiring curious minds through a variety of engaging programs.”

VMAC is a long-time supporter of the Nanaimo Science organization — formerly known as NS3 – Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society. In 2018 and 2019, VMAC sponsored Nanaimo Science’s Science On The Move program, which brings science activities to schools, as well as programs for homeschool students and other community activities open to the public.

“We are thrilled to have VMAC support Saturday Morning Science, particularly during these COVID times where few opportunities exist for children to dive into activities where they can learn new skills,” said Elaine Parker, Nanaimo Science’s executive director. “VMAC’s contribution helps us at Nanaimo Science reach our goals of providing unique educational experiences for young children.”
